World Language Week: Spanish 2

¡Hola todos!

One of my favorite events of the school year is National World Language Week, which takes place in March.  This year it runs from March 13-17, and as always, we will be marking the occasion with lots of interactive, fun activities here at Nipmuc.

Spanish 2 (CPS and Honors) students will be working on a brand new project this year – and we are SO excited about it!  (Props to Sra. Moloney for this great idea!)  Working in groups of 3, students will be competing in an international food truck competition.  Each group has already chosen a Spanish-speaking country, and they’re starting to work on building a booth (their mock food truck) to offer the judges samples of their signature dish.  On each booth, students will demonstrate knowledge of their country (by including a “window” overlooking a monument and creating a unique flag along with facts about its meaning).  In addition, the group’s booth will also display the recipe for their signature dish (with steps described in the past tense in Spanish and pictures to accompany each step).

I’m excited about this project for a number of reasons.  In past years, students have created individual projects based on Spanish-speaking countries that required them to provide static (read: kind of boring) factual information about their country.  While it might be faster and easier to spit back data about a country’s average annual precipitation or its major exports, this task also lacks imagination.  In this project, students are going beyond simple facts to explore the role of cuisine in the country’s culture, and to re-create a piece of their culinary tradition.  By working in teams (rather than individually), students are able to collaborate and brainstorm together.

Students will be working on these projects over the next two weeks, along with frequent check-ins and opportunities to consult with me in class.  Each group will present their food truck and will be judged on their food/presentation on Thursday, March 16 at 1:00 pm.  We would LOVE to see you there – everyone is welcome!

For your reference, please find the due dates for each block below.  These dates have also been shared in class with students and on Google Classroom.  In addition, I’ve attached the CPS and Honors project sheets, so you can see what they’re working on now in class!

Looking forward to updating with some photos/videos as these projects are completed – stay tuned!  🙂
