World Language Week – Italian 3

Ciao tutti!

In addition to the students in Spanish 2, Italian 3 classes are also working hard on some great projects for World Language Week (celebrated March 13-17 here at Nipmuc!)

We’re finishing up a big unit on the past tense (comparing the passato prossimo and the imperfetto, and practicing how to use them together).  To culminate this unit, the students are putting their knowledge to the test and telling fairytales!

In pairs, students are creating completely original fairytales or re-writing their favorite childhood stories to include new plot twists, endings or characters.  In addition to writing and creating a 15-page digital storybook (all in Italian), each pair is also imagining their fairytale as a film and creating a movie poster to display in the lobby during World Language Week.

I love this project because it allows students to demonstrate mastery of a complex language skill, but in a way that is relatable and exciting.  It’s been so fun listening as students brainstorm hilarious scenarios (What if we replaced Goldilocks with Beyonce? What if Sleeping Beauty had insomnia?  What if Cinderella’s shoe did fit her evil stepsister?)  I also like that it balances the use of technology with creative writing and artistic skills.  Students are demonstrating technology proficiency (which is the 21st century learning expectation assessed by the World Language department) by choosing an appropriate digital tool for their story books, while also incorporating creativity with their storyline and posters.

Students have been hard at work this week brainstorming ideas, writing/editing rough drafts and beginning work on their movie posters.  I have created schedules for each class that build in time for me to individually conference with every group to assist in editing.

For your reference, please find the due dates for each block below.  These dates have also been shared in class with students and on Google Classroom.

I can’t wait to see (and share) their final products!
